NSLU2-Linux - FAQ / SpinDownUSBHarddisks

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

For various technical reasons it is not generally possible to adjust the standby timer of an IDE disk connected through a USB adapter (including turnkey external USB drives). See the sdparm page and the section below on sdparm for the technical reasons.

So one method available is to temporarily connect the drive via its IDE connector directly to a big Linux box and run hdparm to set the timer (the -S option is what you’re looking for, PLEASE read the hdparm man page before even thinking about running it).

The second method is to use scsi-idle. However, this requires a kernel patch as the corresponding kernel changes are not yet included in the nslu2-linux binaries. See the scsi-idle section below.

Improv Everywhere Mission: Best Buy

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

The idea for this mission was submitted by a stranger via email. Agent Slavinsky wrote in to suggest I get either a large group of people in blue polo shirts and khakis to enter a Best Buy or a group in red polo shirts and khakis to enter a Target. Wearing clothing almost identical to the store’s uniform, the agents would not claim to work at the store but would be friendly and helpful if anyone had a question. There aren’t any Targets in Manhattan, so I decided to go with the two-story Best Buy on 23rd Street.

MobMov: the mobile movie slash guerilla drive-in in Berkeley, CA

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

A “mobile movie” or mobmov for short, is quite simply a drive-in that drives-in. Participating in a mobmov is very similar to attending a drive-in from the days of old, except now the projector is located inside and powered by a car, and the audio is piped in stereo over the FM band to the attendees’ cars. As a mobmov driver, you assemble the kit, decide on the movies, and announce your showings to friends and the community at large. Then everyone assembles in a dark place with a big wall, and you watch a movie. It’s a new technological twist to a nostalgic idea.

A Barenaked guide to music copyright reform

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Concerned with the prospect of record-label lawsuits against MP3 file sharers, and the continuing march toward greater restrictions on the use of music, the artists — including Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sum 41, Broken Social Scene, Stars, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Dave Bidini of Rheostatics, Billy Talent, John K. Sampson of Weakerthans, Sloan, Andrew Cash, Bob Wiseman, a co-founder of Blue Rodeo, and my own band, the Barenaked Ladies — launched the Canadian Music Creators Coalition.
