RAID-Z is the technology used by ZFS to implement a data-protection scheme which is less costly than mirroring in terms of block overhead. Here, I’d like to go over, from a theoretical standpoint, the performance implication of using RAID-Z. The goal of this technology is to allow a storage subsystem to be able to deliver the stored data in the face of one or more disk failures. This is accomplished by joining multiple disks into a N-way RAID-Z group. Multiple RAID-Z groups can be dynamically striped to form a larger storage pool.

On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

Sobel, the mother of 16-year-old twins in Sherman Oaks, Calif., says they could tell “what was real and what was fake,” even when very young. “I was tired of going to the sports field and seeing moms say, ‘Great job at going up to bat.’ It hit me early on that kids could see through inane compliments.”

Those often-empty phrases, however, raised a generation. Kids born in the ’70s and ’80s are now coming of age. The colorful ribbons and shiny trophies they earned just for participating made them feel special. But now, in college and the workplace, observers are watching them crumble a bit at the first blush of criticism.

The gameroom encompasses two large rooms. The main gameroom has blacklight carpeting and overhead black lighting. A new rock slab is growing at more than one meter a day on the Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington, USA. The rock slab, growing since last November, now extends about 100 meters out from one of the volcano’s craters. A recently made time lapse movie shows the rock slab growing. Pictured above, a helicopter examines the steaming hot rock slab late last month. Mt. St. Helens underwent a spectacular eruption in 1980 but has been undergoing a comparatively serene eruption since 2004 September. A new volcanic dome has been building which is now about 100 meters above the 1980s dome. The rock slab is visible from the Johnston Ridge Observatory on the erupting volcano.

In 2002, there were great fears that the disc would become unreadable as computers capable of reading the format had become rare (and drives capable of accessing the discs even rarer). Aside from the difficulty of emulating the original code, a major issue was that the still images had been stored on the laserdisc as single-frame analogue video, which were overlaid by the computer system’s graphical interface. The project had begun years before JPEG image compression and before truecolour computer video cards had become widely available.
